Rumors about the plans of the South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix to introduce the DDR5 RAM standard began months ago, but it is only now that representatives of the company have revealed the first details of the new iron. Vendor not only announced the start date of deliveries of the advanced modules, but also published a list of their key specifications.

The company’s website has a table that compares the features of the latest standard with the current DDR4. Moreover, SK Hynix recalled that in November 2018, one of the first to develop a 16 GB DDDR5 chip, which was subsequently certified by JEDEC.

Based on the presented table, the flagship model in the module line will be a bar with a maximum throughput of 8,400 Mbit/s, which is almost three times higher than the predecessor. The number of banks will increase from 16 to 32. Additionally, memory will support error correction and jamming technologies (ECC and ECS).

By reducing the operating voltage from 1.2 to 1.1 volts, the new modules will consume 20% less energy than DDR4. Production of 16 GB memory chips will be carried out using a 10-nanometer process and will start this year, with the first deliveries starting in 2021. According to SK Hynix, the company plans to release 24 GB modules in the future. Chipmaker analysts are confident that the demand for new memory types will increase by at least 43% by 2022.
